Introduction
If you work on FTTH (Fiber to the Home) or FTTB network deployment, setting up a GPON ONU (Optical Network Unit) is one of the most fundamental yet critical on-site tasks. A correct ONU configuration ensures stable fiber connectivity, consistent data transmission and full compatibility with the local OLT (Optical Line Terminal).
Whether you are an ISP field technician, a system integrator, or even an end user with basic network knowledge, this guide walks you through the standard ONU provisioning process in clear, actionable steps.
Prerequisites Before You Start
Prepare these items and operator parameters before configuration:
- A working GPON/EPON ONU device (with or without Wi-Fi)
- An active optical fiber line connected to the local OLT
- A standard RJ45 Ethernet cable
- A desktop or laptop computer
- Provisioning details from your ISP / network operator:
- LOID (Line Identification) or SN registration code
- Authentication password (if required)
- WAN connection type (PPPoE, DHCP, Static IP)
- Service VLAN ID for internet, voice or IPTV
Step-by-Step ONU Configuration Process
Step 1: Complete the Physical Connections
Start with correct hardware wiring:
- Plug the optical fiber cable into the PON port on the ONU. Avoid sharp bending of the fiber to prevent signal loss.
- Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to any LAN port on the ONU, and the other end to your computer’s Ethernet port.
- Plug in the power adapter and power on the ONU. Wait 1–2 minutes for the device to fully boot.
Pro tip: Wait until the POWER and SYS indicators turn steady before proceeding.
Step 2: Access the ONU Web Management Interface
- Set your computer’s IP address to the same subnet as the ONU. Most ONUs use a default gateway such as
192.168.1.1or192.168.100.1. For example, set your PC IP to192.168.1.10with subnet mask255.255.255.0. - Open a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) and enter the default gateway IP in the address bar.
- Log in with the default username and password (usually
admin/admin; refer to the device label or user manual for exact credentials). - You will enter the ONU main configuration dashboard.
Step 3: Configure PON Registration & WAN Service
This is the core step to connect the ONU to the OLT network:
- Navigate to the WAN or PON Registration menu.
- Select the registration mode. Most global operators use LOID authentication:
- Enter your assigned LOID number in the LOID field.
- Enter the matching password if required by your ISP.
- Create a new WAN connection profile:
- Select connection type: PPPoE (most common for residential broadband), DHCP or Static IP.
- Enter the correct VLAN ID provided by the operator for internet service.
- For PPPoE mode, fill in your broadband account and password.
- Save and apply the settings. The ONU will automatically attempt to register with the OLT.
Note: Some networks use SN (Serial Number) based registration instead of LOID. Always confirm with your network operator first.
Step 4: Set Up Wi-Fi (For Wi-Fi Enabled ONUs)
If your ONU has built-in wireless functionality:
- Go to the Wireless / WLAN settings page.
- Enable 2.4GHz and/or 5GHz Wi-Fi signals.
- Set a custom SSID (wireless network name) for easy identification.
- Select WPA2-PSK / WPA3-PSK as the security mode for best protection.
- Set a strong Wi-Fi password and save the configuration.
Step 5: Verify Connection Status
After configuration, confirm the service is running properly:
- Check the ONU indicator lights:
- PON LED: Steady green = successful OLT registration; Blinking = registration failed.
- LAN LED: Flashing = normal data transmission.
- Return to the ONU dashboard and check WAN status. It should show Connected with an assigned IP address.
- On your computer, visit a website or run a
pingtest to confirm internet access.
Step 6: Optional Advanced Configurations
For business or project deployments, you may also configure:
- Port mapping / virtual servers for remote access
- QoS (Quality of Service) to prioritize voice or IPTV traffic
- TR069 remote management for centralized ISP control
- LAN port isolation for enhanced network security
Common Troubleshooting Tips
- PON light keeps blinking: Inspect the fiber connector for dust or damage. Re-enter the correct LOID/password. Contact your operator to confirm the OLT port is activated.
- No internet after successful registration: Double-check the VLAN ID and connection type. Reboot both the ONU and your end device.
- Cannot access the web interface: Confirm your computer is on the same subnet. Press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds to restore factory defaults, then try again.
Wrapping Up
ONU configuration is straightforward when you follow the standard workflow and use accurate operator parameters. The key to smooth deployment is ensuring proper PON registration and WAN settings that match your local network environment.
